Die Elbin Lúthien und der Mensch Beren dürfen erst heiraten, nachdem Beren für den Elbenfürsten Thingol einen Silmaril aus Morgoths Krone gestohlen hat. Als Beren stirbt, folgt Lúthien ihm in Mandos Totenreich und erweicht ihn, ihr und ihrem Geliebten noch einmal ein endliches Leben zu gewähren.
